9 influential books

These are the books that have influenced me greatly in the last few years, I feel that each of them have had an impact on me one way or another. This list is by no means exhaustive.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling – The entire Harry Potter series has been infinitely influential throughout my life I just adore the characters and the world which JK Rowling created. I picked the Half-Blood Prince particularly because I feel that the character development made in this book was enormous and it is my favourite novel in the whole series.

Room by Emma Donoghue- This book was influential because it was scary, the subject matter was serious and the book gave me chills all the way though. I still find this this book haunting even when thinking about despite it being a year since I finished the book.  The book carries the huge message  of the importance of family. For anyone who doesn’t know this book is about a mother and a son who are kept captive in a Room. The novel is written from a young boy’s perspective thus we get to witness his naivety as he enters the world outside of the room for the very first time.

Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones- I spent two years studying it as part of my GCSE English literature at school, during this time me and one of my closet friends shared a copy of this book she was in a different year group to myself so the book was passed between during the time of our exams. I find this book influential because it was the first time I had shared a book with someone and it was the first time I had shared the experience of reading together with someone. This book also reminds me of the love and passion that my English teacher had for books and how someone managed to ignite my passion for learning. This book reminds me of the wonderful memories of my English classroom.

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro – This book was a book my English teacher (the same teacher who taught me Mister Pip) recommended to me. I found this book intriguing and amazing and it was a real introduction.  I can remember reading it by the pool in some sunny place but I felt chilled to the bone because of the edgy plot.

Ready Player one by Earnest Cline- This book is every geek’s dream it’s filled with geeky references and 80’s pop culture. This book to me is influential because it shook me on how much the internet impacts our lives but it also reflected the message of friendship as it portrayed that a true friendship is not a connection that is physical it is mental. The protagonist in the book Wade has never even met some of his closest friends however they were still there for him in parts of the story.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden – I read this book for a creative writing segment as part of my AS English, I fell in love with the writing style and the setting of Japan. I found this book influential because it sparked my love of Japanese culture and it got me interested in a new segment of history.

The Bell Jar by Silvia Plath- This was another book which I had to read for my AS English class, it was the first book I read where one of the key and obvious themes was mental illness. I found it shocking and chilling to the extent that the book’s messages still remain with me today. It has make me more conscious of my mental health to the point that I now believe that one’s mental health is as important as one’s physical heath.

Girl interrupted by Susanna Kaysen- I found this book very similar to The Bell Jar its message and the book was chilling and earth shattering.  This book appeared accurate detailed and shockingly real.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger- This book to me was influential because it had such a unique premise however it still had heart warming and heart breaking moments. I fell in love with the protagonists Harry and Claire and their story.  The story was beautifully presented with its unique twist it reminded me what it is like to be human.

I have many books which I find influential and these are just a few, I find that most good books leave a lasting imprint on me. You know a book is good when you have a book hangover after it o even r if you wish that the book’s world could become your reality in some cases.

Always,
