My 2015

I wouldn’t describe 2015  as the best year of my life but,  it most definitely has had some high points.
All though I didn’t achieve astounding A Level results I did manage to earn myself a place at university. Now I am studying subjects that I love and I’m looking forward to having a career in a field which I am head over heels in love with.

I feel like I am walking out of 2015 with a lot less than I had in previous years, I’ve lost some who I once held so dear , others I have chosen to lose because of their  subconscious unkindness and as a result I will not be taking them into 2016 with me. Some people who I will be taking with me are the amazing humans who I have met in 2015 though, this is amazing!

I did however achieve a hell of a lot in 2015: I passed my driving test, I fell in love with driving and I gained the freedom to make amazing memories with people who I love. I also learned to love myself, I have accepted that I will never fit into societies’ cast iron mold for what is beautiful is, I no longer care about that, beauty is not defined by the size of your jeans, being a beautiful person is most definitely to do with what is on the inside as a pose to what is on the outside too.

I started this blog! That’s pretty great right? If it wasn’t for that you wouldn’t be sat here reading this right now!?

Possibly the most important thing I have earned this year is experience, experience which I can carry with me into the future (hopefully I can use some of the lessons I’ve learned and not be a complete and utter moron)

Always,
Lauren

Distance.

Recently I’ve felt distance.

Distance from the people who once meant the most to me.

This isn’t a physical distance, like the miles from London to Sydney, this distance is inexpressible.

I feel like I’m clutching at sand, grains running down my fingers uncontrollably.

People who were once daily occurrences just slipping though my fingers.

Some of this distance is forced on my part , I have pushed a wedge between me and people I once held dear because I couldn’t deal with how they mistreated me.

However a proportion of the distance has been because of a shift in paradigm, changes in social patterns and new priorities. I am no longer in their circles and they are not in mine.

So that is what has caused distance.

I don't want them back.

Always.

I have been adventuring …

Relaxing …

More adventuring …

Comic coning ….

Gigging …

Snuggling …

I understand that I have just created new verbs. Basically life has been running away with the recently and I’ve not really had much chance to write content , but I thought I would give you an insight on some of the exciting things that I’ve been doing in November.

The best feelings in life are free

Getting into your bed after a long day and falling into clean crispy sheets.

The first sweet sip of your favourite freshly brewed hot drink.

Treading in clean, crisp fresh snow where no humans have ever trod before.

Waking up naturally on a lazy morning then feeling the warm heat of your loved one snoozing next to you.

Hearing the pitter  patter of rain on your window.

Finding out unexpectedly one evening  that you have a lie in the following morning.

Finishing a long shift at work.

Feeling someone smile while you are kissing them.

The rush of confidence you get from wearing your favourite outfit.

A warm knitted jumper straight out of the tumble dryer.

Watching a pet sleep in a deep slumber.

Finishing a good book that is so good that you miss the amazing characters the second you close it.

What are your favourite free feelings?

University life

September this year I started at a small university in Birmingham where I will be studying a joint honors degree in History and Theology. I have not moved away from home to go to university like most people my age do. This was partly due to financial costs and that I don’t think that I would have integrated into university life outside of the lecture hall very well. I’m not a party animal and I enjoy my own space.

I thought I would take the time to talk about the subjects that I am study for my degree starting with History; I did not start to show an interest in history until I was 14 when I was forced to do it as a GCSE. If you were to tell 13 year old Lauren that she is now study for a degree in History I would have called bullshit. But, at the start of KS4 education I fell in love with History. I am hoping to specialize in more ancient / medieval and possibly some early modern stuff during my degree.
The second subject I am studying is Theology, Theology coming from the Latin theologia, theology is study of the concept of God and the ideas and practices surround as God. I am especially interested in the philosophical arguments surrounding the existence of God (which I might write a separate post about). Generally I have always been really interested about the study of religion and the problems concerning a deity
.
How have you found university life so far?

My overall experience of university so far has been a good one; I have made some great friends and have attended some engaging classes. In addition I have started reading for my first essay (scary stuff)  I’m doing a lot of reading in general. I love being able to share my passion for two amazing subjects (in my opinion) with experts in the field and colleagues.
The uni that I am attending does not have a rampant social/ party scene and so far I have not attended a university party sorry to disappoint.

What are you going to do with such a stupid degree?
Well my friends I plan to complete the necessary qualifications and become a secondary school teacher, I may as well do something that I am passionate in rather than wasting my time doing something that is useful but I hate.

I hope to post as often as I can on this blog in between reading for my degree and I will hopefully be doing updates during the year for any bored sole who is interested. If you have any questions concerning University just ask!

Always,

Lauren

A letter to my 14 year old self

Well hey there it’s me Lauren ,

First of all I would like to say that your looks fucking amazing but the blonde highlights are going to destroy your hair, then the pink will fade and you will be left with some hella damaged hair which will require a lot of love and attention if you want it to back to its full health. I am writing to tell that you are still standing and not a lot has changed really, in the future you still listen to the same music and still possess an unhealthy obsession with Harry Potter.

Secondly I would like to tell you not to worry Lauren , don’t worry about not liking the same music as your friends embrace it , because you’re different and it is beautiful just like you are. Lauren you are loving and caring, please don’t worry about not having any friends because eventually people shine through who really care about you.  Be your own crazy self, you will manage just fine.

I would like to warm you Lauren, you’re going to meet boy, you’re going to love him, he’s going to love you but he is going to break your heart, you will cry however, you will be strong and you will make it through. You never needed him anyway, you need to stick at things when they get tough, you will make it through. I hate to tell you this but you will thing you have found ‘the one’ several times and it never turns out to be, I’ll give you a call when I find him.

Lauren you also need to stop crushing on Edward Cullen he is not a good model boyfriend in fact he is a despicable example of a boyfriend so you need to stop reading the bloody twilight books and get on with your life. There are far better books out there I promise you; you are going to love them.
This leads me to your obsession with reading, don’t throw all of your books away, you may hit a huge reading slump but you will fall in love with reading again.

That music degree Lauren? Forget it music will always remain your first love but it will not be your career, work hard music will play a huge part in your life but other subjects will shine though and you hate for History will turn into a love believe me! Your singing voice will develop to the point that you can sound like a Disney princess with very little effort, it’s an excellent party trick!!

Lauren I know that you are in a rough place at the moment but I am telling you that it gets better. Those cuts will heal, you will relapse again but it is going to be okay you will get better and things will improve.  You will learn to love yourself don’t worry about your weight, your looks or style be yourself make the most of opportunities you are doing well , keep your head down , work hard in school because it won’t last forever . Your school days will not be the best of your life but you still need to enjoy them. Spend less time on tumblr and get shit done (but tumblr will pay a huge role in your life so don’t abandon it completely).

That’s all I’ve got time for, stay true to you , love yourself.

Getting Pierced

I have a number of piercings and have been pierced on a number of occasions so thought that I would share some tips for anybody looking to get a piercing for the first time.
This is my daith heart piecing which took
aroung 6 months to heal.

One research the piercing that you actually want: look into what it is like to actually get the piercing, look at photos of the piercing so you have an idea of the placement of the piercing. In addition research into the general healing time of the piercing plus the aftercare that the piercing will require. Also, you might want to look in to the level of pain that you may experience when getting the piecing, remember that pain is subjective though.

Two research the studio/shop that you want to get your piercing at. Go online read reviews, ask people, and look on social media do everything you can to research the place where you are planning on your piercing. You want to make sure that the shop meets the government requirements when it comes to piercing and that their staff are well trained and experienced. This could mean paying slightly more for the piercing but personally I would rather pay more to be pierced at a reputable piercing shop than have a piercing on the cheap and it go wrong.

Three eat before you get pierced; make sure that you eat a meal or a snack at least half an hour before you have your piercing. This is because when you get pierced your blood sugar can drop due to the rush of adrenaline this leaves you prone to fainting. You might even want to take a sugary snack with you to eat straight after you get pierced to raise your blood sugar.

My Tragus and Snug piercings. As you can see
I have a few scars on this ear from previous piercings
this is something that you need to consider.
Four listen to what the piercers say, ask questions and get any advice while you are there. I advise you to listen to the piercer’s opinion because at the end of the day they are professional especially when it comes to jewelry, healing time, cleaning and maybe even placement of the piercing in some instances. It might also be a good idea to ask what size jewelry you are being pierced with as you are often pierced with jewelry that is too big for the healed piercing to allow room for swelling. This means that when you piercing is healed you might have to purchase and change your jewelry, some piercers include a free jewelry change others may require a small fee for the jewelry to be changed. But knowing your jewelry size will be a help.

Piercings can be fun and a wonderful easy way to get a new look  but you often have to consider what impact a piercing can have on your job prospects or even if the piercing leaves a significant scar or not. Always remember that you can take your piercings out, they don’t have to be in your body forever but they might leave a scar.

I hope these tips will be useful to anyone looking to get pierced for the first time. Just remember to take time to decide if the piercing is something you want to commit to and to do your research.

Always,

Lauren

Dating Yourself

Being in a relationship with someone is great, it is wonderful to fall in love with another human and share a special connection. But, sometimes in life we have periods where we just don’t have that, we just need to learn how to be alone.

In the periods where we are single I think it is important to date yourself , I don’t mean taking yourself for a romantic meal for one , I mean getting to know yourself again thus learning to love yourself. You should be able to exist as an individual , you are whole person thus you do not need to wait around for second half.

When we are in a relationship we get used to ourselves as part of a couple, as a result we spend less time alone so we don’t know what it’s like to be ourselves for extended periods of time. When you’re single you spend much more time alone evenings, weekends rainy days , bank holidays. You need to start to be able to spend time on your own again without feeling like you are cloaked with loneliness and disrepair.

Learn what you like to watch on TV again, read your favourite books again or even uncover a hobby that you have not done in years;you need to learn what it’s like to be just you again. You might want to take yourself for a coffee, see a film or even go to the theater alone. THERE IS NO SHAME IN GOING PLACES ALONE. As one of my good friends would say "treat yo self!"

By having this period of alone time you will get to learn about your likes and dislikes again , you will be aware of your character traits and you will be able to build up for confidence maybe be ready to meet someone new. Being alone shouldn’t be a frightening, daunting experience it should be an exciting time where you take the time to get to know yourself again. Before anyone else makes you happy you need to learn how to make yourself happy.

Always,

Travel

To me traveling isn’t about how far you have been it is what you have experienced. If you travel to the other side of the world only to sit in four blank walls then you have not really travelled at all , you have experienced nothing. You could walk half a mile up the road and explore a forest, or drive to the nearest beach and dip you toes in the ocean but this does not make you less of a traveler than the person globetrotting.

Sometimes exploring is about appreciating what’s right in front of you rather than glamorous slights miles away. Appreciating your home town’s glory goes not undermine world famous land marks like the Eiffel Tower or The Pyramids  it just means that you can appreciate what is around you . Instead of longing for escape  by the means of somewhere foreign, try to seek something new within your community , climb a new tree , visit a new coffee shop travel and exploring isn’t about how far you have traveled it is about what you have seen , felt , heard or tasted.

My final request is please don’t travel somewhere so you can boast about where you have been or even  so you can plaster your Instagram with beautiful sights , you can by all means show your appreciation though photographs , possibly capture memories but don’t visit somewhere just so you can say that you have been. That is visiting for the sake of and is a waste of time. Visit somewhere because you want to take something from that place because you want to experience that place. It's smell, it's feeling or even its sun blazing down on your skin.

Enjoy your time travelling, enjoy you time exploring please make the most of where you have been and where you are going to go. You don't have to go far to be a traveler.  Do not value the sights on your doorstep less than the ones one another’s enjoy where you are wherever you are.

Always,

Lauren

Working in retail

Every Saturday I drag my sorry ass to my job in retail, for the most part I enjoy my job I have a wonderful set of colleagues and we have a laugh (while working hard). However, sometimes there are a few things about the job that really get on my nerves , most of these gripes involve customers , hopefully this post will encourage people to be polite to the people who offer a  service to you  wherever you go.

My first gripe about my job is that people assume that I am stupid, just because I have a job in a shop this does not mean that I am stupid. I am in fact a University student who is trying to earn some money to live on while I am studying. Calling me stupid or inferring that I am stupid is darn right rude. Everybody in life has a right to try earn a living, regardless of their intelligence and there is no need to treat people like they are stupid.

This leads me on to my second gripe, which is that people are so rude to me. Please and thank you go a long way so I suggest you use your manners. Furthermore please do not be rude to me because you are trying to get a reaction out of me, your rudeness towards me will encourage me to be extra polite towards you to prove a subtle point.

My next gripe is refers to my age, people seem to assume that because I am young I do not know what I am doing but really they couldn’t be more wrong. I have in fact received more than adequate training in order to do my job. I work in the food industry specifically selling cooked meats; I have been told countless times by customers that I am serving them the wrong thing. For example the other day a customer came to the counter and asked for three slices of ham, I proceeded to serve this customer some ham (like they had asked) but they shouted at me telling me that what I was serving them was not ham I was serving them   beef, when I politely told them that the meat that  I was serving them  was in fact  ham they had asked for they simply argued with me saying that they actually wanted beef (placed behind the ham they had read the label wrong) the customer obviously thought that I didn’t know the difference between the two products even though they are completely different colours and come from a different animals and I prepare the meat whenever I am at work. I digress,  I do know what I am doing when I am at work, If  I am ever unsure I ask my manager in order to make sure that the customer receives the best service possible. Yes I am young but I know what I am doing.

Another gripe which I am sure that many of you in retail can relate to is when a customer comes into work right before you are about to close. Now, because I work with food we have to make sure that all of the stock is correctly sorted and that the entire shop is clean before we can go home; this requires us to start shutting up shop an hour before official closing time , as a result we will not be able to serve you stock five minutes before I go home. You couldn’t expect a restaurant to serve you a three course meal five minutes before they close you shouldn’t really expect a retail worker to serve you five minutes before they close. Retail workers have homes to and when our shift is coming to a close we look forward to going to it.

My final gripe is that I have when at work is that people expect me to be able read their minds. The other day I went to serve a customer I said “hello can I help?” the customer replied “I dunno what I normally have?” I serve 100’s of customers on a regular Saturday I do not know what every single regular customer has when they come into our shop, I’m sorry but I am only human. On other instances customers point to objects through the glass at work and expect me to be able to preempt or see what they are pointing at its just physically impossible.

Overall many of the experiences that I have had at work have been good ones, I enjoy meeting new people and being able to help them as best I can. My job is never boring and many of the skills I have developed through the job will stay with me for the rest of my life.  I encourage people to be nice to any people you come into contact with in retail , they are trying to work a job and make a living , working in retail can often mean working long hours on your feet and working holiday. Please be courteous we are human too.

How to get a girl to like you- Advice for guys on how to find the perfect girl.

Disclaimer – this advice is quite sarcastic follow at your own risk, I am not responsible for any dating disasters that occur.

Tip number one, IGNORE HER, this is one thing that really will get a girl to fancy you. Ignore her Facebook messages, snapchats, and even text messages she will love it. Make sure she can see that you have read the message so she knows for sure that you are ignoring her.

Tip Number two TALK TO OTHER GIRLS AS WELL AS HER, girls really dig this one, and they love nothing more than when you’re giving multiple girls attention including her. Girls love seeing the guy they are interested in talk with other birds. Why the hell not you’re not committed anyway so you should make the most of it.

Tip number three which will definitely help you attract girls is if you DO NOTHING BUT TALK ABOUT YOURSELF.  Telling a girl extensive trivia about yourself will make her more into you, especially of you don’t come up for air.  In fact we love it when you don’t show an ounce interest about yourselves, you should just keep talking about yourself until you are blue in the face.

Tip number four which will cause girls to worship you if you SAY YOU WILL MAKE PLANS BUT NEVER FOLLOW THEM THROUGH. Girls love it when you say ‘we should meet up sometime’ but do not ever follow the gesture up. Girls love to be kept waiting so saying that you will meet up with her then not following through will make her fall head over heels for you.

So those are a few tricks of the trade for all of those guys out there who want to attract the perfect girl.

Always,

Where the bloody hell have you been?!? LIFE UPDATE

Long time no see or speak, well whatever needless to say I took an impromptu break from blogging because life just got crazy.

On the 13th August I received my A level results, I was happy because I got the grades to go to University to study Theology and History but the grades were a little lower than what I wanted which was disappointing. On the bright side I am still going to University in September (woo).

Secondly I went on a short holiday to Paris with some of my friends from guiding. For those of you who don’t know I am a Girl Guide, I volunteer at a Guide unit and I am part of a Ranger unit for young girls ages 14-25. Guides is a little bit like Scouts but for girls. Whilst in Paris we took part in an event which was essentially a huge treasure hunt round the center of Paris. We also had an amazing day at Disney Land Paris where we unleashed our inner child. It’s felt good to get away even if it was just for a short time, I feel suitably refreshed and ready to try and face life again.

Anyway I am getting my ass into gear and I will be writing new posts very soon.

Big and beautiful?!?

Over the past few years I have received compliments like “even though you are big you are still beautiful” as touching and those compliments may be I still find them insulting. I am what people consider to be plus sized; this somehow puts a limit on how ‘beautiful’ I can be.  I wouldn’t dream of going up to my naturally slim friend and say “you’re beautiful even though you are skinny” so why should it be different for others? Why can’t all people of all body shapes and sizes be considered beautiful? In addition, I do strongly believe that beauty isn’t just a matter of physical appearance it’s the moral and emotional side of a person too.

Undoubtedly I could afford to lose some weight, I could cut calories, hit the gym but I simply don’t want to. I value other aspects of my life more highly than my physical appearance like my education, my hobbies and interests. I can definitely think of worse things to be in the world than fat. But for the record if I was to take refuge during a zombie apocalypse my fat stores could keep me alive for a very long time (just saying). To reiterate my point A GOOD PHYSICAL APPERANCE IS NOT THE ULTIMATE FACTOR FOR SUCCESS. As human beings we can be so much more than just physically attractive , we can be funny, intelligent, compassionate and so much more! My fat is just stored energy cells it does not limit me in any of my personal qualities. I am happy and healthy, that is what matters to me and the people I care about most.

The bottom line is no matter what your body size is you deserve to be appreciated , don’t shame someone for being skinny equally do not shame someone for carrying more weight . Their life decisions do not impact you so keep your mouth shut.  We all beautiful in our own ways, we are not big but beautiful or small but beautiful, we are just beautiful. Nobody is going to convince me otherwise.

Your Disorders.

Our disorders are part of us, they make up us, our disorders will carve  out a specific personality trait but they shouldn’t define us.

Our disorders should not control us they shouldn’t have us on a lead pulling us this way or that .They shouldn’t pull you from tunnels that you wish to take like a cruel owner denying their dog of a good smell.

What I am saying is that you shouldn’t let your anxious butterflies, depressing shadows, cuts, or bald patches stop you from living your life. They should not tell you when to walk out the door and when to stay in.

I pray that you accept that you disorders are part of you but please do not let them rule your life; do not let them rule you future because they ruled you past.

You are more than your disorders.

How I feel about people

I adore my friends, they are loyal, funny, classy, supportive I love spending time with them, talking and socializing but sometimes it can get too much. Some mornings I wake up and I just can’t face socializing that day, I feel like my opinions are unimportant, my presence unwanted. I feel that because I’m not loud, classy or funny they may not want me to be there but sometimes I just like to observe and listen.

Sometimes I know that I am very different to my friends, I prefer gigs to clubs, I like music that to most just sounds like a screaming mess, but to me it may as well be the sweetest symphony, my friends prefer the gentle hum of an acoustic guitar and the soft serenading sounds of an Englishman. I often wonder if these slight differences are more  like a canyons too vast for any of us to jump over, I worry that these differences set me apart from all the rest to the point that they just don’t want me around anymore.

I am unable to decipher if the lack of response from a text or Facebook message as a silent recognition or blatant ignorance. I often chose the latter, branding silences as a dislike for my character or that they are just bored of me possibly I am annoying. I worry that I have been replaced by a shiner a more eccentric friend someone who can offer so much more than myself.

It is no exaggeration when I say that people scare me, quite often I find that people are neither here nor there, I can never solve the expression on my friend’s face when I rave about a novel, I cannot see if she stares intent with great interest or if she is dreaming of more pressing matters. I find people difficult to read. I do not have the ability to see if your one word answers reflect boredom or just the concept that you are just busy.

I know fear rejection after losing people over and over again for no specific cause. I worry that people who the friends who mean the most will leave I do not fear fierce disagreements; I fear disappearance without a word. This year I lost someone who I felt highly of, one day she was here, and the next she was not. Her responses to my messages non-existent against my enthusiastic greetings, she left no clues as to why she cut me out she just cut me dead like a phone line, merciless to a wild tornado. I too felt merciless, I asked and asked myself how someone I loved so much could just leave me like that, that question still haunts me.

I always thought that social anxiety was a pretend disorder that tragic girls on tumblr claimed . I thought that it was just a pretend label used  to attract desired attention. It was not until I started college that it hit me, it punched me when I still ate lunch alone in my second year unable to wiggle into any friendship group unable to feel a part of anything.  I didn’t talk to people not because I was rude or obnoxious but I just didn’t have anything interesting or valid to say, I feared judgement but most of all I feared that they wouldn’t like me just because they didn’t like the same things as me. When I passed peers in the corridor, people assumed that I was rude but the idea of saying hello made me want to vomit.

Today I still feel worried about starting conversations, I get concerned that people may sigh when they see my greeting thinking “it’s her again, she’s so annoying”  I feel that my conversations waste people’s time and they could be taking to someone they like much better.

I guess this causes barriers when I am trying to form relationships with the people around it, please be patient, I am working on it, I just want to be appreciated and loved for who I am.

Why I judge a book by its cover

The Phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is frequently used however I am a firm believer that daily we do judge books by their covers and the covers of books serve a vital role when marketing abook.  People want beautiful books in their collection; we see books not just as prose but a product or its own art form entirely.

I think the creation of a book cover is a form of art;. A good quality cover on a book can draw a wider target audience to your product subconsciously; I myself have bought books on a whim just because of how beautiful the cover was. I did not consider the content of the book I just saw how pretty it was and had to have it on my shelves. I feel that not all book covers are well executed but the story inside is still extremely well executed but a good cover can turn a book into a more desirable product.

I believe that the colour scheme of a book is so important a beautiful complimentary colour scheme on a cover can work wonders for a book. It sets the mood of the book, the season , the tone even the genre to some extent , I feel like I am often drawn towards books that have blue on the covers I don’t know why but I find the colour blue very attractive.

Secondly is the typography on a book a good font on a book can make it so much more beautiful.  The font in which the title is displayed can say so much about a book so it can be essential the publishers get it right.

Thirdly is the photography or illustration on the book cover this can make or break a cover a good book with a bad image on the cover can draw people away from the book. A beautiful image can draw people in.

I often feel that the images on some books mimic a very popular book of a similar genre just to draw people. I find this frightfully unoriginal but it really does work. When I was younger I purchased Ritual and Legacy by Alex Duval because the cover looked very similar to that of ‘The Twilight Saga’ by Stephanie Meyer. Needless to say I loved this series far more than I did ‘The Twilight Saga ‘ but if the covers hadn’t have been similar to the Twilight books I wouldn’t have been draw in and I wouldn’t have found some of my most favourite vampire books.

I understand that there are many other things a potential buyer will consider when buying a book other than the cover, obviously the prose inside it what essentially matters but I just love appreciating book covers for the art work I believe they are.  Personally I don’t consider music art work when buying music, I appreciate it however I buy because of the Artists’ name attached to the music.  I consider the presentation of the CD much less than consider the presentation furthermore the artists’ names matter much less to me when buying a book and the presentation of the text matters much more.

Overall, I love books, I am a collector of books and I enjoy pretty things, I enjoy have beautiful books on my book shelves. I will always be drawn to attractive book covers and I will always judge a book by its cover.

Always ,

Tedious Tinder , a dating revolution?

For those of you not familiar with Tinder it is a dating app where people are selected for you to view based on gender preferences and location you to approve individuals based on a small number of pictures and a short description which you write for yourself. You must swipe left to approve a person and if they do the same you are “matched” therefore you are free to talk to each other and get the ball rolling.

Tinder originated in an American University it spread across various institutions, then the world.  The app takes the awkwardness out of introductions and allows you to chat and make friends in a less nerve-racking way. I have personally found the app a pivotal; it has changed my dating game play entirely, after feeling downtrodden after my latest dating disaster tinder picked me up and allowed me to be able to talk to be casually again without a huge commitment.

I have made many friends unintentionally because of the app one being one of my closest friends to date, although I often go browsing in tinder to find friends rather than a decent fuck I find hours of amusement through the app. However, like anything in life this app has its pitfalls.

First of all I would like to talk about the whole idea of the picture selection.  Naturally I chose the 5 most attractive selfies to use on my tinder profile so much so that I think they give an unrealistic representation of what I actually look like. I would assume that this is the case for many people who use the app; they just don’t look as good as they do in their pictures.

Secondly is the clash of intentions, tinder has a reputation of being a hook up app or even an app where committed people look to cheat the latter I think is completely wrong! But, I do find it difficult chatting to people sometimes when all they want is sex and all I want is a decent conversation.

On the flipside I do find tinder hugely entertaining and it has successful for many for example I have heard of may relationships because of Tinder, a friend of mine recently go to know someone and is now in a relationship with someone that she met on Tinder , they are now happily together. I do stress please be careful when meeting people you know from the internet in real life do you research and if so skype them (so you know they are who they say they are) first. I myself have had dates with people that I have I have got to know through this app.

Overall I do think that Tinder has changed the way I think about online dating and it has installed confidence in me thus giving me the ability to socialize more.  I do not believe for one second that I will meet the love of my life through Tinder however it has introduced me to some awesome exiting people that I would have never met otherwise.

Being a short girl at the supermarket

Recently I posted about wat it was like to be a short girl at gigs I decided to follow on with the theme of short girl problems by discussing what it is like to be a short girl at the supermarket.

First of all we have the most obvious problem the shelves, oh the shelves most of the shelves at any typical supermarket tower above my 5’3 stature this makes it incredibly difficult to reach many shelves. It is very kind when people decide to help me however I do find it slightly insulting, as a short girl I find reaching the cereal on the top shelf an Olympic achievement a phenomenon that needs to be celebrated. If you reach for that cereal box for me you take away my glory.

A second problem at the supermarket for me is the trollies especially the deep trollies. I am fine throwing my stuff into the trolley/shopping kart but getting it out is another story. Not only are my leg short but so are my arms which means I can’t reach the bottom of the trolley so it makes reaching for products at the bottom of  the trolley  very difficult. This causes me to dive like some sort of pearl hunter , looking like a complete idiot in the process.

These are hilarious but real issues that I face during every trip to the supermarket, in addition to this people seem to think that I am invisible because I sometimes fall below their eye line. Countless times have I had people walk into me purely due to the fact that they ‘couldn’t see me’. This could be rudeness however I AM A REAL PERSON WITH REAL FEELINGS DO NOT TREAT ME LIKE I AM INVISIBLE!

Many of the issues raised cannot be solved however I reach out to you. Please be sympathetic to the people of below average height especially at the supermarket.

Always,

Lauren

How to survive a Long Distance Relationship

Long Distance Love
Being in a long distance relationship can teach you many things: trust, patience, communication and many more. I have recently come out of a long distance relationship but never fear I have some advice for you which can help you survive yours even if mine didn’t work out.

Communication – This is possibly one of the most important factors with any relationship especially the long distance type. Daily texts, messages, skype calls or phone calls can be vital for your relationship’s survival. This also goes to stand for any arguments that you many have within the relationship. If you’re having issues in the relationship you may need to discuss them sooner rather than later to avoid any problems being blown out of proportion.

Trust- For a long distance relationship trust is vital; this is where my previous relationship fell apart because I didn’t trust the person i was with.Needless to say if you do not trust your long distance lover your relationship should not exist and it will not be successful.

Organisation-  In a long distance relationship you need to be organised , planning dates , day trips and events will give you something to look forward plus, help you make the most of the time that you manage to spend together.  You will also have to arrange travel and accommodation if applicable when you visit your lover to help the trip run smoothly.

Sentiment and sentimental reminders- When one is in a long distance relationship you are permanently missing the other person so little sentimental reminders can help you get through the bad times thus helping you look forward to the good.  Making a scrap book and having shared positions such as soft  toys are all cute things that can help when you are missing your partner. Maybe have a shared play list of music that you both love   In addition , taking many photos when you are together can help you look back on what a great time you have together to help your spark stay ignited when you’re apart.

Be spontaneous – For this you will need to be creative however small romantic gestures can keep your relationship alive for example hiding messages in positions like bags and coat pockets for your lover to find when you’re apart. There are many ways you can treat your partner to surprise them with many international flower delivery companies or buying small gifts off amazon wish lists, these are all small tokens which can show affection.

Make the most of the time that you have together- Plan to do exciting things and appreciate your partner while they are there. This may mean cutting off from the outside the world to an extent to be fully involved with your partner. Unfortunately, time is of the essence when you’re in a long distance relationship you can scroll through the Internet when you’re apart and you emails can wait because when you are together your partner should be priority.

Obviously these tips are not exclusive to long distance relationships however, they are some of these tips I have come up with from experience.  In essence long distance can work if two people are willing to put their all into the relationship. Like all relationships longs distance ones are hard to maintain but they are 100% worth it when the one that your love is nestled in your arms. *vomits*

People I would like to have a cup of tea with

As the title explains these are the people (dead or alive) who I would like to have a cup of tea with, I may not invite these people all in one go but I would be very intrigued to see what they had to say. Through out my life these people have either fascinated me or inspired me  This list is obviously hypothetical.

Hitler – It is undoubtable that Adolf Hitler would not be a pleasant choice for my tea party however I would love to ask him to what extent the events of the holocaust were influenced by him and I would also like to know if how one could stand up for such a fierce ideology even though in someone’s heart of hearts it is morally wrong.

Jesus – Under the assumption that Jesus did exist, I would like to invite him for a cup of tea.Firstly I would like to ask him if all of the miracle acclaimed to Jesus (including the resurrection) were actually true.  I would like to know what it was like to be such a high profile figure during that time period but I would also like to know if Jesus really was the son of God or whether he was just a glorified Rabbi.

Marilyn Monroe – I would like to invite her because she is stunningly beautiful to look at; I would like to know her actual waist size. I guess I would love to know if she really was sleeping with the president or not.

J.R.R Tolkien – Purely so I can fan girl the hell out at him!! In addition I would just like to talk to him about mundane things to see how is amazing mind works, I have no specific questions for him but I would just like to be in his company.

J.K Rowling- The only living person on my list!! I would specifically like to have J.K Rowling to tea with J.R.R Tolkien because it is distinctively obvious that she drew some of her inspiration for the Harry Potter books from Tolkien’s work.  I also want to have her to tea because there are a number of unanswered Harry Potter questions that she needs to hurry up and address.  A further reason why I would love to have a cup of tea with J.K Rowling is because I find her inspiring; she is the person who created a world that I have been in love with for as long as I can remember she created one of the most influential books of my entire childhood.

Always,

Lauren

Albums that saved my life.

Whether my struggle has been mental or physical I feel that the albums that I have listed below have helped me along the way, sometimes I feel that some of them have been there when I feel that I have nothing else. They really have saved me.  These are in no particular order.

Of Mice and Men- Restoring Force, this album to me is bloody flawless. There is not a single song on it which I am not in love with. I felt that I could identify with the music could describe how I felt at a particular time in my life. I was lucky enough to hear most of this music live earlier this year and I feel that there is nothing quite like a musician or a group of musicians playing their own music to an audience. You can really see how much the songs mean to the audience but also how much the music means to the writers and players.

U2 – Under a blue sky, historically this album speaks volumes, I love that it is a live album.  This album will always remind me of my Dad who used to sing the songs to me as I was growing up. I was recently able to study about the issues in Ireland in the 1920’s and I think the song ‘Sunday bloody Sunday’ especially highlights how history is far more than what we read in text. Volumes such as music and television have also imprinted on our history.

Deaf Havana – Fool and worthless liars, I got into this album when I hated my current situation in education, I used to listen to this while I battled with endless amounts of college work. I felt that the songs summed up what it was life to feel lost and anxious about life.  I have been able to see these guys play live twice; furthermore I have never experienced a more humble set of musicians in my life with such a deep connection to their musical material.

Escape the Fate – Ungrateful, I listened to this album every morning on the way to college for about six weeks. During this time I had hit rock bottom concerning my personal and I felt that my world was falling apart. Now it comforts me and reminds me that no matter how bad shit gets I can ride it.

Paramore  - Riot , Paramore were the first band which I remember falling hard for at the tender age of 13. Their album reminds me of my nostalgic early teenage years. I have seen Paramore play on 3 separate occasions each night has been phenomenal and Hayley Williams the lead singer of this band will forever be my woman crush Wednesday.

Pierce the Veil – Collide with the sky, this album I love more and more each time I listen to it. After a painful chapter in my life I went to see these guys live not really feeling it or wanting to go , I was one of the best nights of my life as for the first time in years I was able to let my hair down and go absolutely crazy. In addition a few of the songs in this album make references to self-harm and self-harm recovery something that I can relate to very deeply. When the band played the song ‘Hold On Till May” I was just overcome with sadness when looking at the girl’s arm in front of me. I was able to see that I was covered in scars and cuts I was able to realize that I was not alone and that someone is dealing with the same shit as me. I am reminded that sometimes I shouldn’t be so caught up in my own problems because there are people out there who are having it worse than me or are struggling as equally.

You Me At Six – Hold me Down, this is another album which I would regard as flawless , it reminds me of my earlier teen years but the songs still speak to me today in my later teenage years. I feel that this record sums up all of the hate and resentment in my life. I have heard You Me At Six play numerous songs from this album on 4 separate occasions and they are just amazing.

For some this list may be long, you may hate the bands which I rave about but these albums really do mean the world to me. They have helped me in many ways which not human could, music is an essential part of my life and I feel that it is honestly something that I could not be without for the good times and the bad. I don’t care if you thing that any of the bands listed above are shit or stupid because these albums have changed my life.

9 influential books

These are the books that have influenced me greatly in the last few years, I feel that each of them have had an impact on me one way or another. This list is by no means exhaustive.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling – The entire Harry Potter series has been infinitely influential throughout my life I just adore the characters and the world which JK Rowling created. I picked the Half-Blood Prince particularly because I feel that the character development made in this book was enormous and it is my favourite novel in the whole series.

Room by Emma Donoghue- This book was influential because it was scary, the subject matter was serious and the book gave me chills all the way though. I still find this this book haunting even when thinking about despite it being a year since I finished the book.  The book carries the huge message  of the importance of family. For anyone who doesn’t know this book is about a mother and a son who are kept captive in a Room. The novel is written from a young boy’s perspective thus we get to witness his naivety as he enters the world outside of the room for the very first time.

Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones- I spent two years studying it as part of my GCSE English literature at school, during this time me and one of my closet friends shared a copy of this book she was in a different year group to myself so the book was passed between during the time of our exams. I find this book influential because it was the first time I had shared a book with someone and it was the first time I had shared the experience of reading together with someone. This book also reminds me of the love and passion that my English teacher had for books and how someone managed to ignite my passion for learning. This book reminds me of the wonderful memories of my English classroom.

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro – This book was a book my English teacher (the same teacher who taught me Mister Pip) recommended to me. I found this book intriguing and amazing and it was a real introduction.  I can remember reading it by the pool in some sunny place but I felt chilled to the bone because of the edgy plot.

Ready Player one by Earnest Cline- This book is every geek’s dream it’s filled with geeky references and 80’s pop culture. This book to me is influential because it shook me on how much the internet impacts our lives but it also reflected the message of friendship as it portrayed that a true friendship is not a connection that is physical it is mental. The protagonist in the book Wade has never even met some of his closest friends however they were still there for him in parts of the story.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden – I read this book for a creative writing segment as part of my AS English, I fell in love with the writing style and the setting of Japan. I found this book influential because it sparked my love of Japanese culture and it got me interested in a new segment of history.

The Bell Jar by Silvia Plath- This was another book which I had to read for my AS English class, it was the first book I read where one of the key and obvious themes was mental illness. I found it shocking and chilling to the extent that the book’s messages still remain with me today. It has make me more conscious of my mental health to the point that I now believe that one’s mental health is as important as one’s physical heath.

Girl interrupted by Susanna Kaysen- I found this book very similar to The Bell Jar its message and the book was chilling and earth shattering.  This book appeared accurate detailed and shockingly real.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger- This book to me was influential because it had such a unique premise however it still had heart warming and heart breaking moments. I fell in love with the protagonists Harry and Claire and their story.  The story was beautifully presented with its unique twist it reminded me what it is like to be human.

I have many books which I find influential and these are just a few, I find that most good books leave a lasting imprint on me. You know a book is good when you have a book hangover after it o even r if you wish that the book’s world could become your reality in some cases.
